Wenn man etwas verändern will, muss man den ersten Schritt tun.

Hi y’all,

ich habe passend zur Jahreszeit ein Weihnachtslied geschrieben und mit einigen wunderbaren Freunden aufgenommen, welches ihr hier kostenlos runter laden und auch weitergeben könnt.
Gleichzeitig möchte ich euch bitten, mir ein paar Minuten Eurer Zeit zu schenken um den nachfolgenden Text zu lesen.

Ich arbeite seit 1 1/2 Jahren neben meiner Tätigkeit als Musiker auf dem jamtruck, einem musikalischen Projekt für Jugendliche im Alter von ca. 11 – 20 Jahren, vorwiegend in sozialen Brennpunkten von Essen.
Durch diese Arbeit habe ich ziemlich abrupt aus der Nähe gesehen, dass in unserem Land – und wahrscheinlich auch in allen anderen Ländern – das Geld für alles mögliche ausgegeben wird, aber nie dahin fließt, wo es wirklich gebraucht wird, unabhängig davon, welche Regierung uns gerade verspricht, mehr Geld in die Bildung zu investieren.
Ich bin der Meinung, dass die Bildung unserer Kinder das Höchste Gut einer Gesellschaft und die beste Investition in eine friedliche Zukunft ist.

In der aktuellen Erhebung über Kinderarmut in Deutschland nimmt meine Heimatstadt Essen einen traurigen Spitzenplatz ein. Dort werden wir ab Januar mit dem jamtruck an einem Standort stehen, der im Bezug Kinderarmut der am Heftigsten betroffene in der Stadt ist – und das keine 2km Luftlinie entfernt von einem weiteren, überflüssigen Rieseneinkaufszentrum, welches mehrere 100 Millionen Euro gekostet haben dürfte und uns eine heile, hochglanzpolierte Konsumwelt vorgaukelt.
Einen Steinwurf davon entfernt gibt es Kinder und Familien, denen es an der Versorgung ihrer Grundbedürfnisse fehlt und deren Perspektiven höchst ungewiss sind.

Dieser Sachverhalt steht mit Sicherheit nur stellvertretend für viele andere ähnliche Situationen, von denen ihr aus eurem eigenen Umfeld berichten könnt.
Ich weiß, dass es viele nationale und globale Organisationen gibt, die sich für das Wohl der Kinder einsetzen und die speziell auch in der Weihnachtszeit um Spenden bitten. Ich möchte deren Arbeit und Notwendigkeit auch auf gar keinen Fall in Frage stellen.

Trotzdem gibt es leider immer noch genügend andere Stellen, an denen wir helfen können und wo auch kleine Spenden etwas bewirken – und zwar sehr unmittelbar.

Alle an diesem Projekt beteiligten Musiker und ich würden sich unheimlich freuen, wenn ihr euch in eurem lokalen Umfeld ein wenig umschaut, wo Kinder- und Jugendeinrichtungen eure Hilfe gebrauchen können. Jede kleine Spende hilft. Jedes weitertragen von Informationen hilft. Jeder, der einen ersten Schritt tut, hilft.
Wir freuen uns über jeden, der den Song “At Christmastime” und diesen blog vernetzt, damit er möglichst viele Menschen erreicht.

If you want to make a difference, you have to make the first step.

I have written and – with a bunch of wonderful friends – recorded a Christmas song which you can download here . At the same time I would like to ask you for a couple of minutes of your time to read the following blog:

For the last 1 ½ years I have been involved in a project called jamtruck©, a musical project for kids aged from 11 – 20 in/from socially neglected backgrounds in my hometown, Essen.
In the course of this work, I have seen up close and personal, how in our country – and probably in any other country in the world – money is spent on anything and everything except for the things most needed, no matter which elected government is telling us they will spend more money… on education!
In my opinion one of the greatest goods of a society is the education of their children, and it is one of the best investments for a peaceful future.

In the most recent survey about child poverty in Germany, my hometown occupies one of the top spots. From January onwards, the jamtruck© will be located in a neighbourhood which is regarded as the poorest in the city when it comes to child poverty – about a mile away from yet another expendable super-shopping-mall which probably devoured a couple of a hundred million Euros.
Living literally a stone’s throw away are children and families who are lacking bare necessities and whose outlook is most uncertain.
This situation is without doubt just one example of similar circumstances you will/might happen to come across in your own neighbourhood.

I know that there are many national and global organisations/charities whose main objective is to benefit disadvantaged children and which are asking for your support, especially at Christmastime. I want to stress strongly that I do not want to challenge the necessity and good work of these organisations.
Nevertheless and very unfortunately, there are still many more spots where we CAN help and where even a small donation can make a very immediate difference.

For example, the “Jugendhaus Zwingli”, in Essen, is an organisation that helps kids with their homework, supplies lunches, organises great playing activities and is in need of every Euro.
Every musician involved in the making of this song would be very happy to see you taking a closer look at the neighbourhood you are living in. Maybe there is something you can do to help children in your environment?
Every small donation counts. Passing on information counts. Everybody who makes that first step counts.
